Below is the description of the three acts in diablo 2.

Each act has its own areas and levels, such as dungeons, cathedrals, catacombs, and etc. Each act has a town, and a theme, Act I has a forest/plains theme, Act II has a desert theme, Act III has a jungle theme, and Act IV probably has a hellish theme, but that is unknown. This section will include information on the acts, towns, and levels we know of and have information about.

Waypoints are permanent portals that travel to a specific location in each act. In each act, there are many of these scattered in necessary positions. Once you touch a waypoint, it will be placed on a way points list, so you may travel to that way point, through any other waypoint.

Act I

Act 1 acts as more of an introduction to the game than anything else, although it is challenging in its own right. It is more linear than the other acts, and allows both people new to the Diablo world and those who will have to deal with the vastly changed interface to get used to it. They will not be introducing many completely new monsters in Act one, but keeping with the more familiar ones from Diablo. The quests are also much more straight forward, clear out a cavern or defeat a certain monster, with little dificulty beyond the moster killing.

The Rogue Encampment is the town of Act I.

Wilderness
The wilderness is a vast plain enviroment.
Monastery
The monastery is a large building with many floors.
Cathedral
The cathedral is like a small monastery.

Rogue Barracks

Tristram
Tristram is the town from the original Diablo, now left in ashes.

Act II
Act 2 is not only far larger than act 1, but it is much less linear. You could wander around the desert for a long time, and into monsters much to hard for you, if you don't talk to the NPCs and find out where exactly to go. The majority of the landscape is a desert, but you can also go into such areas as sewers and desert crypts.

Lut Gholein
Lut Gholein is the town of Act II.
Palace
The palace is a beautiful castle.
Tombs
The tombs are many linked chambers under the desert of Act II.
Sewer
The sewer is many linked skinny tunnels under the desert.
Desert

The Desert is a vast dry area.
Sand Maggot Hive
The sand maggot hive is a dark dank cave under the desert.

Act III
Act 3 is similar to Act 2, except more difficult. The quests will require intelligence and skill, as will defeating the enemies, many of which will have multiple and magical attacks. The monsters in the swamps and marshes of this act will also be more numerous and intelligent, compared with the monster of act 1, which will likely be barely above Diablo 1 intelligence level.

Kurast
Kurast is the town of Act III.
Jungle
The jungle is a vast area full of trees, etc.
Temple
The temple is a large building, surely with many lower levels.
Abandoned Village
The abandoned village is an empty town of many houses.

Finale Not much is known about the finale, it is probably in a hellish setting. Blizzard is keeping any and all information on this act in total secrecy.
