ACT 1

Act One: NPCs

The characters of the first act are living in the shadow of evil. Their home, the monastery, has been overtaken by evil forces, and they must now live in a city of tents as they await their salvation at the hands of you, the hero of Diablo II. There are several NPCs awaiting you at the tent city. Some of them are the leaders of the Sisters and will be the originators of various quests, while others simply add flavor. One nice touch to all the NPCs is that they react differently to different characters. Charsi, for example, is fascinated by barbarians and so has a little extra dialogue when dealing with them. For all others, she is all business. Here are the NPCs of act one you'll meet.

Warriv

Warriv: He is the caravan leader and is a good source of information about the area and the events of late. He ordinarily drives his caravan through the mountains and to the east to conduct trading, but he can't now because Andariel has blocked the passage. Once you defeat Andariel, he'll take you to the next town.

Akara: She is a rogue priestess and is the religious leader for the Sisters of the Sightless Eye. It is she who gives you your first quest, the Den of Evil quest. Once you do that, she will reward you and also trade with you. You can go to her to purchase magic items, weapons, and miscellaneous items. Later in the act, Kashya will also give you the Tristram quest, where you must return to Tristram to rescue the sole survivor of the town, Deckard Cain, our Horadrim friend from Diablo.

Kashya: Kashya is the military leader of the rogues and so is the active day-to-day ruler of the Sisters. You won't win her confidence until you complete the quest she gives you, which is the Kill BloodRaven quest. Once you find and kill the renegade BloodRaven, Kashya will show her acceptance by letting you hire rogues to join you for the rest of act one. She'll offer several rogues at a time, each with slightly different stats. Although they act on their own AI, these rogues will fight with you and provide support for the dangers ahead. You can at least tell them to move and also specify targets for them, and you can hire more than one rogue at a time to join you.

BloodRaven: This evil NPC lives in the wilderness and is resurrecting rogue corpses near the rogue's graveyard and turning them into zombies. Once you kill her, Kashya will let you hire rogues.

Charsi

Charsi: Charsi is a blacksmith who sells, buys, and repairs armor and weapons. Although her repair skill is not essential to the game, she sometimes offers you a quest, which is to retrieve an item from the monastery that will let her fashion better weapons. It is a unique item for which she will reward you handsomely. Charsi is fascinated by barbarians.

Gheed

Gheed: Producer Matt Householder calls Gheed the "Harry Mudd" of Diablo II. This traveling salesman has more expensive wares, but he offers a selection that neither Charsi nor Akara can match. Gheed has a special dislike for necromancers.

Deckard Cain: Deckard is found in Tristram, and once rescued, he follows you from act to act and provides information on what is happening and what to do next. He'll also now identify items for free, rather than charging you 100 gold. He must be found first, though, by completing the Tristram quest.
